BIODIVERSITY LOSS

WHEN ANIMALS VANISHED

Through the testimonials of twelve female researchers from Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Sri Lanka and Croatia, this video summarizes several environmental problems related to biodiversity loss, the importance of effective actions to preserve biodiversity and the role of women on nature and biodiversity protections.

The impact of the climate crisis on plant, fungus, and animal species is undeniable, and future scenarios predict that biodiversity loss will continue to worsen. Biodiversity loss entails the loss of ecosystem functionality and is linked to the deterioration of fundamental ecosystem services for humanity.

Species associated with continental water ecosystems are especially vulnerable to the climate crisis, as rising temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, and other anthropogenic impacts lead to the destruction of these habitats. In fact, it is estimated that a quarter of the world’s endangered species inhabit rivers, lakes, and marshes.

Traditionally, strategies to study, conserve, and protect these ecosystems have been based on the perspectives and needs of men. However, adding a gender perspective to these actions can lead to a different management of aquatic habitats, considering women’s relationship with these habitats and the species they harbor. The voice of women is essential to take bold measures to curb biodiversity loss in these ecosystems.
