The study of inland waters is full of fascinating women who have vastly contributed to our understanding of these precious ecosystems. However, as in many other fields, their contributions have been traditionally neglected.
The Gender & Science Commission was launched in 2014 with the aim of acting as an observer of the gender bias within freshwater sciences. Since then, we have studied different barriers that female scientists face during their career, and led different activities to accomplish gender equity in the study of inland waters. |
Since 2018, the Commission also organize exhibitions and events to make visible the critical role of women in the study, management and protection of inland waters.
Currently, the commission is formed by more than 20 researchers from different institutions and work tightly with the Iberian Association of Limnology (AIL). |
OUR OBJECTIVES
PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES
EXHIBITIONS. We create exhibitions to make visible the role of women in the study, management and protection of inland waters. These exhibitions are available for scientific, social or educational institutions around the world.
TEACHING RESOURCES. We publish freely-available resources for promoting gender-fair teaching lessons at universities. Recently, we are also collaborating with elementary school teachers to visualize the effect of climate change on freshwater ecosystems from a gender perspective. PUBLICATIONS. We publish scientific articles aiming to assess the barriers that women have to face during the scientific career and propose guidelines to achieve gender equity in science. Most recent publications are Sánchez-Montoya et al. (2016), Lupon et al. (2021), Catalán et al. (2023) and Mendoza-Lera et al. (2023). We also participated in the book Mujer y agua: una relación natural. OUTREACH. We give seminars or participate in round tables at different universities and research institutions of Europe. In addition, most of our group members give talks at primary and high schools of Spain to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. |
