The Gender & Science Commission was launched in 2014 with the aim of acting as an observer of the gender bias within the Iberian Association of Limnology and other institutions directly or indirectly related to the study of inland waters.
Since then, we have studied various barriers that female scientists face during their careers and led numerous activities to achieve gender equity in the study and management of inland waters. |
The Commission also organizes exhibitions, seminars, and events to highlight the critical role of women in the study, management, and protection of inland waters. These activities are aimed at both the scientific community and the general public.
Currently, the Commission is composed of more than 20 researchers from different institutions and works closely with the Iberian Association of Limnology (AIL). |
OUR OBJECTIVES
PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES
EXHIBITIONS. We create exhibitions to highlight the role of women in the study, management and protection of inland waters. These exhibitions are available for scientific, social or educational institutions worldwide.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. We publish freely available resources to promote gender-fair teaching practices at universities. Recently, we have also begun collaborating with elementary school teachers to teach children about the effect of climate change on freshwater ecosystems through ecofeminist lens. PUBLICATIONS. We publish scientific articles that assess the barriers women face in their scientific careers and propose guidelines for achieving gender equity in science. Recent publications include Sánchez-Montoya et al. (2016), Lupon et al. (2021), Catalán et al. (2023) and Mendoza-Lera et al. (2023). We also contributed to the book Mujer y agua: una relación natural. OUTREACH. We conduct seminars and participate in round tables at universities and research institutions across Europe. Additionally, many of our members give talks at primary and secondary schools in Spain to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. |
